How to get rid of bad breath: Seven ways to eradicate the smell

Dental, Wellness, Preventive Health, Dentist

Bad breath is a problem many of us have experienced once. However, we often don’t notice until other people start leaning away from us. Try these seven tips to eradicate your bad breath.

Bad breath, or halitosis, can be the result of “poor” oral hygiene.

The NHS said the condition is a “common problem” and can affect “anyone at any age”.

“If bacteria build up in your mouth, the toxins produced can cause your breath to smell.”

“Bacteria break down pieces of food in the mouth, and may release an unpleasant-smelling gas”.

Dr Harold Katz, who founded The Breath Company, told Express.co.uk you should try these seven methods to get rid of bad breath.

Robust oral care

This may sound obvious, but brushing and flossing your teeth at least twice a day can help you avoid bad breath.

“Be sure to get a toothbrush with soft bristles, as to not damage tooth enamel or gums, and use a high-quality fluoride toothpaste,” said Dr Katz.

Drink regularly

“Staying hydrated is a key factor in keeping your mouth healthy,” said Dr Katz.

“Dehydration can cause a range of oral health issues that include dry mouth, bad breath, cavities and gingivitis so ensure you drink eight glasses a day.”

Eat an apple
This fruit contains a lot of water, which promotes saliva production, “flushing away bad breath bacteria”.

Avoid alcohol
Dr Katz said alcoholic mouthwashes can give you bad breath as they dry out your mouth.

“Don’t use any oral hygiene products that contain sodium laurel sulphate or alcohol,” he said.

Don’t try fad diets
“As summer approaches, many people look at ways to drop excess pounds quickly,” said Dr Katz, “but fad dieting can lead to bad breath.

“Low-Carving in particular can cause something called ketobreath.

“This is where a ketone called acetone that smells like rotten fruit is emitted from the body via the breath.”
